Summer is a time to play, explore, discover, and learn. Here at Escape to the Arts we have created a summer program to suit the needs of children of all ages. We offer 7 sessions of hands-on art classes which are one or two weeks in length. The two week sessions include a fieldtrip to a local museum on the last Friday of the session. Starting June 23rd, come join us for a half or whole day of artistic fun where your imaginations can run wild. Class sizes are limited so sign up before summer begins!

The Cartooner’s Survival Guide to Summer - Joe
Part I: Fantastic Fantasy: Learn to draw sci-fi characters using color and inking technique while developing a story line and dialogue for them. Join us for this creative adventure into your own fantasy world.

Even Picasso Had to Learn How to Paint - Joe
Learn to paint with acrylic and watercolor: Students will learn brush techniques, color mixing, and much more. This class will motivate students to develop their drawing and painting skills.

Vivid, Vibrant, Nut-so VanGogh - Joe
Using oil paints, students will be all “ears” during this class while they learn techniques and the style of Vincent VanGogh. Students will explore principles of design, brush technique and much more.

Developing Doodles into Drawn Masterpieces - Joe
Part I: Really Still Life, Furry to Fleshy Figures: Learn to draw from a professional artist. Students will study still life arrangements and figures of all kinds, rendering them in a variety of media such as pencil, charcoal, colored pencil and ink, using a multitude of shading and lining techniques. Students will form a strong foundation in drawing which will lead to their artistic success in other media.

Part II: Breaking Out: Visiting the great outdoors helps put landscape drawing into perspective. Students will have the opportunity to draw urban and rural settings during this class, learning atmospheric perspective and linear perspective. A must have in the repertoire of an aspiring young artist. Students will travel off site two days a week. Transportation is provided by the YMCA.

Peeling the Layers of Computer Graphics - Joe
Guided by a professional graphic artist, students will learn Photoshop using drawing tablets as an effective tool for artistic creation. We will learn how to scan, edit and use multiple techniques commonly used for digital coloring. Some drawing and computer knowledge is required; projects will vary depending upon student’s proficiency.

Express Yourself through Paint - Veronica
Looking for a way to express yourself and learn some more technique? Look no further. Here, we’ll try out different mediums, some different paint effects, and make some beautiful pieces of art, all under the guidance of a professional artist!

Nurture Your Wild Side with Mixed Media - Veronica
Do you drive your parents crazy by taking stuff apart and putting it back together? Do you like finger paints and playing with shiny colors? Do you like glue and puzzles and feathers? Would you like to spend a few hours each day getting to play with a whole mess of stuff to create some fabulous pieces of artwork? Don’t be shy, join this class! You’ll get to create crazy sculptures, altered journals, fabulous décor, and creative collages.

Girls Growing as Leaders - Veronica
Here’s an introductory class on what it means to be a leader. We’ll look at some of the things women have done to help make the world a better place, and what some other girls are doing now to help! We’ll also explore what it takes to be a leader, such as honesty, and integrity. Best of all, we’ll get to play fun games where girls will learn about dynamic leadership and how to be a team player!

Creating Masterpieces with Unusual Media - Veronica
This is your chance to try something a little different than your usual drawing class. In here, we’ll explore drawing technique but with some extremely fun mediums. Delve into the grittiness of charcoal, or glide with the colors of pastels, and best of all, let’s melt crayons and create wax paintings! Your imagination is your limit!

Relax and Draw - Veronica
Everyone can learn how to draw! In this camp, we’ll learn basic rules and drawing techniques, and we’ll not only use pencils, but get to experiment with pen and ink! Learn about values and shading, proportions and perspective - we’ll have a blast, and get to relax.

Portfolio Development - Veronica
Develop your portfolio for college admission. Using drawing as the foundation for all art-making, work from the still life and clothed models to strengthen your observational drawing skills. Explore mixed media and paint, and increase your understanding of such art concepts as line, value, form, perspective and proportion. Class is geared toward specific portfolio requirements and includes extensive one-on-one instruction.

So Sew Crazy! - Chansoda
Do you like to sew, or would you like to learn how? This is the perfect class for you! We’ll start with some fun, easy projects, like pillows or pajamas - you can even embroider your own designs on them! And we’ll move up to purses and bags, sleeping masks, aprons, the choice is yours!

Digital Scrapbooking Camp - Chansoda
Get scrapbooking insanity by first learning how to make your own book for the scrapping. Then, we’ll learn the basics of Photoshop to create new images from old ones. Of course, the next step is taking those images and putting them into our books along with a mix of decorations!

Not So Boring with Board Games - Chansoda
Design your own board game, or choose a favorite board game and re-create it here as you want it to look. We’ll then make the pieces using sculpey, and by the end of the week, you’ll get to play on your very own self-made board!

Dress with Style - Yours! - Chansoda
Look for fun ways to spice up your wardrobe - get out the scissors, doodle with embroidery, paint new designs on fabric, revamp those old sweaters, turn a sweatshirt into a skirt, and take an oversized t-shirt and make it into a tank top that fits! You could even change an old pair of jeans into a new purse! Let’s have some fun, and be our own fashion designers!

Unwind in Digital Design - Chansoda
Incorporate your own photography with professional computer design programs to communicate your message to the world! This class will take trips and study visual communication in this day and age, and you get to bring what you learn into our graphics lab to create your own visual design.

All Natural Printmaking - Chansoda
Students will discover a whole new method to express themselves visually. Students will create their own printing blocks out of natural materials and make their own ink too!

Story Clay Time
There is nothing more enthralling to a young child than a good story with vivid characters. In this clay class young students will listen to a story then create a character or scene from that story out of clay. Students will glaze their creations.

Impressions of Nature
Students will use objects found in nature to create unique textures on their pottery creations. The focus will be on hand built vessels.

Round and Round Throwing on the Wheel
Students will learn the basic techniques for throwing on the wheel including centering and trimming each piece. We will start of small and then work big, big, big!

Scratching the Surface
Students can explore the beauty of surface decoration. The emphasis will be on useful forms, such as pitchers, bowls, plates, and mugs using decorative techniques like painting on pots, texturing, hand building, sprigging, carving, and sgraffito. Students can work on the potter’s wheel or hand build their creations.

Camp Tiki - Suzi
Join in the fun as we transform our art studio into a Tropical Paradise. We will create a variety of projects inspired by the sand, sun and sea.

Magical Mixtures - Suzi
This camp is back by popular demand. We will experiment with recipes for molding mixtures and special mixtures that kids love. Fundoughs are an excellent medium for stimulating creativity and imagination. We will have handfuls of fun as we learn basic hand building techniques.

We will explore the world’s most famous artists and their masterpieces and then try out some techniques inspired by their works of art to make our own masterpieces.

This two week camp is for kids that love arts & crafts and want to try it all. We will paint, draw, cut, glue, mold and construct with a variety of materials.

Have you ever painted with golf balls or squirt guns, spaghetti or bubbles? In this camp we will try it all. We will also learn different painting techniques. Get ready for a paint adventure like no other.

Just Picture it and Capture the Moment - Penny
What better way to capture the world around us than through a camera lens? Students will learn to operate a sony digital camera, which we will provide, but you are welcome to bring your own. Learn composition in lighting, subject placement techniques, candids and formal portratiture shooting. Then you can photograph family portraits and events such as parties and weddings, with the use of video and slide shows – all taught in this class!
